The heme portion contains the iron molecule. Hemoglobin has a very complex structure consisting of proteins and heme groups. Two good strategies for solving crosswords with more long across entries than downs are either starting with the downs or glancing at them to confirm across hunches.ġ8D: I bet more solvers have heard of “hemoglobin” than HEME. When you see “me” in a clue, the answer often includes the word “I.” A glance at 1-Down would seem to confirm that 19-Across starts with I, if you recognized that “Grain containers” are SILOS. But there are some clues worth mentioning.ġ9A: “No point arguing with me!” probably takes a few crossings. Struggling with a lot of misdirecting clues while not being able to make any of the theme entries fit would not be fun. The editor wants to be sure that the solver gets enough filled in to be able to see the theme trick. Most of the cluing is straightforward, since the theme is not. I find this a great example of a constructor’s and solvers’ puzzle it evinces a great deal of imagination and skill on Mark’s part but it also makes for a challenging and satisfying solving experience. On the other hand, I doubt there are enough phrases in the language to manage this with a single split form. To make a tricky theme a bit trickier yet, the ER.ER is not split between the two words of each phrase consistently sometimes the first ER ends a word (like LOBSTER), sometimes it’s within the first word (like BEVERAGE), sometimes it’s split across two words (as in ROLE REVERSAL) and sometimes it’s in the second word (as in BLACKBOARD ERASER). With the phrase making a loop-de-loop as you read it from left to right. Until next week, be safe and enjoy the summer. The two ER instances are squeezed into one, with the TH “looping” above the ER. I’ll talk about that when the time comes. If I wind up moving to Frankfort, you will probably continue to hear from me in a similar venue. It truly represents the best of both worlds. And yet, it’s only minutes from downtown Belfast and all its amenities. For all practical purposes it may as well be up north. My house is set in a wooded, secluded woodlot off East Waldo Road. The 35-to 40-minute drive each way is a bit too long, which is one reason my place is on the market. I am now pastor of the Frankfort Congregational Church and need to live closer to the church. My house is on the market and I hope to sell this summer. But wouldn’t you know it, the one saltwater fish we can freely take are as scarce as hen’s teeth. Atlantic mackerel are considered an underutilized species, so anglers need not feel guilty over keeping a cooler full. That’s a shame, because mackerel have no minimum length and no bag limit.
KIRBY S LOBSTER FULL
The bay is full of striped bass, most of them slightly below the artificially imposed minimum length limit. The first open day, I plan to spend on the water in my boat. I’m “down a quart” on fishing and of course, there is only one way to resolve it.
KIRBY S LOBSTER PLUS
July is a good time to have a garden here in Waldo, Maine.Ī busy work schedule, plus motor trouble, now resolved, have combined to keep me off the water as of late. Chard, herbs, greens and lots more add to our list of homegrown foods. Cucumbers and summer squash abound and tomatoes are beginning to ripen. What do you think?Įverything, it seems, is coming ripe now. This begs the question of, should we get a rebate for these paid-for services that were not rendered? I think so, but that is just my opinion. But the remainder of things we have paid for accounts for a significant chunk of money. Of course teachers and administrators continue to draw their pay. The problem is, taxpayers have already paid for these things. Other costly programs were put on hold, too. Since schools shut down this spring, school buses haven’t run and team sports have been sidelined. So while small and decentralized, Waldo has most everything we need. Many of us get our oil and propane from the former Thompson’s Oil, now Downeast Energy.īesides that, we even boast auto repair shops. Besides that, these are friendly people, a joy to visit. And their prices are more than reasonable, far below some better-known seafood outlets. Bill and Lori Kirby always have lots of fresh lobsters on hand, plus crabmeat and clams. What would Saturday night be were it not for Weaver’s baked beans, coleslaw and biscuits?Īnd then we have Kirby’s Lobster Shack, a place I frequent as much as possible. Weaver’s Roadside Variety, for example, offers a host of homemade foods as well as a selection of dry goods.

Waldo may be a small town without a true village center, but scattered here and there are some great businesses.
